While I love having solo time on long runs, one of the things that makes me happiest is family time spent being active and healthy. I am lucky enough to live in a town with many local running events that the whole family can enjoy. Yesterday we all took part in the Dia de los Muertos 5K run. My 3 year old did the kids run and then my husband and I each pushed a kid in a stroller for the 5K. We even took the dog along on the run! While I didn’t get my fastest time I can always justify it by saying that I was stuck with the bigger kid and the heavier stroller! There was even a musical performance afterwards that the whole family enjoyed. I’ve been doing these races with my kids for a couple of years now and it’s been really cool to see the progression and growing interest from my 3 year old. At first he didn’t want to run, which I was fine with, and would rather just ride in the stroller. Yesterday he was SUPER excited for his run, ran most of the way, and then even wanted to run with me on the 5K. But, I must admit that I did make him get in the stroller so that I could get a run in too.
I’ve been battling some knee pain and a pretty nasty cold recently so my mileage hasn’t been much. I had big plans for potentially running my age this weekend (I turned 35 on the 25th), but unfortunately that has had to be sidelined for now. I am grateful for this time with my family and the fact that all of us are able to get out and enjoy an event like this. I certainly hope for many more family runs in the future.
